The Chukchi and their dogs lived peacefully for many years, until the Russian monarchy was overthrown. The Chukchi with the finest dogs had leadership positions and wealth, and the communists saw this as a hindrance to collectivization. Most of the dogs were killed, and in a few years the Chukchi dogs had virtually disappeared. Even though the Chukchi dog had vanished in its homeland, it was gaining recognition in Alaska, where it was known as the Siberian Husky. At first the Siberians were laughed at, because of their small size. But when they placed highly in the All-Alaska sweepstakes, they attracted a lot of attention. Perhaps the most famous Siberian Husky musher was Leonhard Seppala. In January of 1925, a diphtheria epidemic broke out in Nome, Alaska. The serum had to be brought by dogsled. A relay team of 15 sleds was set up. When it was Seppala's turn, he ran almost 350 miles. His famous leaders were Balto and Togo. Today, a statue of Balto, commemorating to the run, stands in Central Park, New York, USA.
